In the 800's AD, Christian hermits arrived in this region, initially occupying caves at the bases of huge natural spires and later building entire monasteries atop them (1300's). Originally reached by hinged ladders and windlasses, roads and stairs now provide access. The tallest spires exceed 1,500 feet. During Meteora's heyday there were 24 thriving monasteries. Only five remain. From these, there is an incredible panoramic view of the Plain of Thessaly. Afternoon return drive to Athens via THERMOPYLAE. Here in 480 BC King Leonidas and 300 Spartans held off an attacking Persian army of 180,000 led by Xerxes. The spot is commemorated by an epitaph to the Spartan King Leonidas with the inscription - "Stranger, tell the Spartans that we lie here, obedient to their command'. The delay won by the Spartans gave the Greeks time to complete their defenses resulting in victory at the subsequent battles of Salarnis and Plataia and explusion of the Persians from Greece. (B)
